Job Title:  Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Reports To:  Chief Medical Officer                         

Salary Range:  $100k+ (Negotiable)

Location:  Newport News/Virginia Beach               

Scheduling:  Some flexibility  

Under the direct supervision of the staff physician and general supervision of the Chief Medical Officer serves as a provider for patients at our health center. Responsible for the management of all medical care for his/her patients to include the provisions of medical treatment and advice to patients as indicated. Arranges or causes to be arranged, secondary, tertiary, or specialized care as required; monitors patient progress directly or in concert with a consulting medical provider; responds to emergencies; encourages health maintenance; maintains appropriate record for accurate billing. This position has Ryan White Title I related duties and responsibilities relative to the provision of care to persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities

Provides and submits primary care services per appropriate nurse practitioner specialty; secures case histories and related and/or pertinent information; diagnosis and treats all patients following the appropriate examination; prescribes medications within parameters of the established prescriptive authority; plans diagnostic studies for each patient as necessary; evaluates all diagnostic results; consults with supervising physician as appropriate; completes all medical records and prepares medical reports as necessary and in a timely manner; submits medical records to supervising physician for review as applicable; as a part of our health centers health care team, participates in or conducts team conferences/case studies/case management activities as necessary; fulfills all appropriate responsibilities; assists in the development of protocols and procedures for preventive and/or special services, health education and nutrition services as appropriate.  Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing medical education and other appropriate learning experience; participates and/or uses findings of medicine and nursing and related disciplines to improve the level of outpatient care at the health center, attend regularly scheduled meetings of the health center medical staff; participates on other medical committees as needed.  Serves as preceptor for medical and nursing professionals and other students as reasonably assigned, participants in activities related to the development of health care plans as needed.

Patient Centered Medical Home - A patient-centered medical home is a model of care that strengthens the clinician-patient relationship by replacing episodic care with coordinated care and a long-term healing relationship. Each patient has a relationship with a primary care clinician who leads a team that takes collective responsibility for patient care, providing for the patient’s health care needs and arranging for appropriate care with other qualified clinicians. The medical home is intended to result in more personalized, coordinated, effective and efficient care.  A medical home achieves these goals through a high level of accessibility, providing excellent communication among patients, clinicians and staff and taking full advantage of the latest information technology to prescribe, communicate, track test results, obtain clinical support information and monitor performance.  

Team Approach - A team-based approach to care is being emphasized by the health center and by the very nature of your position within the organization.  Managing patient care is a team effort that involves each employee, both clinical and nonclinical interacting with patients and working to achieve slated objectives. (e.g., physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, dental assistants, educators, schedulers, patient services representatives, telephone operators, administrative staff, etc. – (this list is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but rather is illustrative of clinical and non-clinical staff).

Employment Standards

Education:  Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience:  Entry-level position acceptable; one-two years experience in community health preferred.

Knowledge:  Good understanding of comprehensive health care programs and activities. Basic knowledge of Physician’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) as defined by the American Medical Association and ICD-9 coding desired.

Skills:  Must have the ability to effectively communicate with physicians, patients, and staff, sensitivity to patient privacy and confidentiality; interest in evaluation and planning activities and sensitivity towards access to care including patient/ center access and/or patient to provider access. Proficient user of an electronic medical records system.

Licenses:  Must maintain a current license to practice nursing from the Virginia Board of Medicine and Nursing, and possess an current and valid Driver’s License, vehicle insurance, a good driving record and a willingness to utilize own vehicles as need in connection with employment.
